My breath fogged up the window as I breathed. It wasn't cold, it was July in New York City, and I was on the thirteenth floor of my apartment building. I had woken up with the same nightmare I'd been having for the past month. Giant ships crossing the skies, buildings exploding, evil maniacal laughter, and fire. Lots of fire.
I looked at my palms and breathed on them slowly, trying to calm myself down. My long porcelain fingers were burning, I must've come down with another fever. My immune system must be pretty damn weak. I slowly walked to the door and into the hallway, gosh it was hotter out here then in my room. I crept over to the bathroom quietly, so as not to wake up my "father". I turned on the light in the bathroom and stared at myself in the mirror. My ice blue eyes were still red from tears, sweat was dripping off my snow-like skin and dyed black hair was fading again. I dyed it so people didn't think I was albino, even though I thought I was. Being an albino classifies you as a freak evidently. I washed my face and sighed heavily, I wished it was colder. Then I heard "father's" alarm go off.
Excellent. He was going to work. "Father" never told me what he did, (he probably didn't trust me because I wasn't really his daughter). I had nothing else to do, so I might as well follow him, there was no way I was going to fall back asleep anyway. He'd be leaving in fifteen minutes. I quickly went back to my room and put on the closest thing to camouflage I had. An irish green sweater, black skinny jeans, and black converse. It was uncomfortably hot, but I could manage. I slowly opened my window and crept down the fire escape, into the SUV and into the trunk. Five minutes later, "father" got into the car. Fantastic.
I heard the car door slam as I woke back up. For once, I couldn't remember my dream. "Father" locked the car and adjusted a lab coat. What the heck did he do for a living? I waited until he was far enough away then I opened the trunk and followed him, making sure to stay on his right (he was deaf in his right ear). He walked down the corridor and turned into some big room, I stopped following him there. I stayed in the corridor, listening to the sounds. I heard mumbles of people talking and the sounds of electricity. I saw a blinding flash of blue light and I heard "father" scream. "Get away from the Tesseract now!"
Tesseract? What's a Tesseract? I tried to look over and see what was happening when another flash of blue light hit me. I ducked and curled into a ball, like the coward I was. What was happening?
I heard some mumbles before I heard a tough sounding voice echo through the room, "We have no argument with your people."
I heard another voice, more evil sounding, with some sort of accent, "An ant has no quarry with a boot."
My first thought was simple. Poetic. Who was this guy, Shakespeare? I heard the tough guy say one more thing, "Leave now, and you will come to no harm."
I heard the sounds of electricity shoot through the air. I uncurled myself and peered around the corner just as some guy dressed in green and black fired off some blue energy from a spear at a bunch of guys in lab coats. Including "father". He was the third to go down. I panicked and ran out to him, for once calling him by what he liked me to call him, "DAD!" He was bleeding all over the place, he looked at me horrified. I didn't even see the rest of the world now, it was just me sitting with him.
"Father" looked up at me, "Iss, what are you… get out of here…" he then ceased breathing and I snapped back to reality.
Tears fell from my eyes, what was I going to do now? I looked at him one last time and turned around, Mr. Shakespeare guy was behind me taking out the last of the other people. The tough guy was trying to get up, probably one of the last survivors of the attack. Shakespeare picked up a glowing blue box with his left hand, and then turned around, our eyes meeting for the first time. I wiped away my tears, with a look of fear in my eyes. I was probably going to be the next to die. He smiled evilly at me before he spoke, "Well, well, well, what do we have here?" he walked over and leaned down looking at me more closely with green eyes.
I tried to get away from him but I wasn't exactly on my feet so I just shuffled backwards. I closed my eyes and turned my head slightly, but I could still feel his gaze. I felt his hand on my cheek, it was cold and it soothed my burning skin. For the first time in my life I was cold. I opened my eyes and saw him smirking down at me, a man with a bow was now next to him. He straightened himself and looked down at the glowing box in his left hand. The room started to crumble, and he turned back toward the blue portal. "Take her." he said. The man with the bow then picked me up. I kicked and screamed. I heard Shakespeare speak again once more, "Shut her up." and I felt something hit my head. My vision faded to black.
I was surrounded by ice, my hair was long and white like it was supposed to be and I was wearing the lightest blue silk robe. I smiled with perfectly white teeth and started running around exploring the icy palace. I felt someone behind me and long pale fingers covered my eyes. I giggled and turned around-
I woke up, I was lying on a cot in a different place. I looked around, people were walking around, the bow guy was about twenty feet away. I bit my lip and decided to sit up, closing my eyes and rubbing them. I had the worst headache known to mankind. I sighed and when I opened my eyes, Shakespeare was standing over me. I jumped and tried to get away but their was a wall behind me. My heart was pounding in time with my head. Shakespeare laughed and spoke.
"I see you're awake." he said. He bent down so he was at my eye level. The air around him was cool, it made me calm down.
"Who are you? Why did you kill my father?" I demanded.
"I am Loki, God of Mischief. I needed the Tesseract and he was in my way." Loki had a passive look on his face. "Who might you be?"
I glared at him, "I'm the one who's asking the questions here. What is the Tesseract?"
Loki raised an eyebrow and leaned closer to me. "I'm the one who's captured you. I could have just as easily let you die there, underground." I bit my lip, he kind of had a point. He spoke slower this time, intimidating me, "Who are you?"
My lips quivered and I answered quietly, "I… my name is Iss." I didn't want to be around him too much longer, I got a weird feeling in my stomach when I was around him.
Loki smiled, "Now that wasn't so hard was it?" He was acting more pleasant now, he had leaned away and given me my space back. "I just have one more question for you." I hunched my back and sighed.
Loki leaned back in toward me, making me smack into the wall, he spoke and I could feel his cool breath on my face, "Why do you call him your father if he isn't really your father?"
My eyes widened, "How did you know?"
Loki smirked again, "You don't usually call him father, the way you say it," his nose touched mine, "It's foreign to your tongue."
I blushed heavily. I couldn't help myself, I'd never been this close to a guy in my life, much less a handsome one. Loki kept smirking, "Do you fear me?" How could I answer that?
I bit my lip and shook my head, I stared into his eyes, he chuckled.
"Don't try to lie to me." He stood up, "It's not going to work." He could see right through me. A shiver crept down my spine and I lay back down on the cot. Maybe if I didn't talk he'd forget I was here, I mean he was totally insane. God of Mischief? This guy was an obvious psycho. I closed my eyes and put my hands over my head. I needed to sleep, the headache was going to kill me. Maybe when I woke up, I'd be rescued. Maybe this was a dream…
Not a chance. I woke up after the same dream, the only difference was that I didn't scream when I came to. It was dark and silent. I was already crying from the dream but I sobbed loudly when I found that I was still there. Alone. On a damn cot.
I buried my face in my hands, like the crybaby I was. I trembled and sniffled, tears streaming down faster than Niagara Falls. I couldn't stop.
I heard someone walk towards me. I didn't want to be weak in front of my captures, but when I tried to stop I let out another sob.
"Shh…" I heard in the darkness, I felt a hand on my shoulder. "Hush, now. It was a dream." It was a cold hand even through my sweater. I tried to stop but all I managed was to quiet down a bit. The voice got softer and whoever it was patted me on the back, trying to get me calm.
"Shh…" it said again. I sniffled and wrapped my arms around whoever it was. They were nice and cool, it made my tears stop falling. I could tell by the hug and the voice it was definitely a man but who? He started to remove my arms from him when I hugged him tighter.
"Please don't leave." I begged. I needed comforting and this guy certainly was.
He thought for a moment. He stopped moving and patted my head. I unwrapped my arms from his waist and put my head in his lap. I closed my eyes as I felt his soft hand stroke my head. I smiled, falling asleep.
